cadmium elemental information

Cadmium electroplating service in Toronto, Ontario is not demanded as it once was, however, H&E Plating Ltd plates cadmium regularly. Our electroplating shop in Scarborough has rack, barrel, and micro-barrel Cadmium plating lines operating. We can handle lengths of up to 12 feet on our rack line. Small lot orders of less than a Lb, on our micro line, are a walk in the Industrial Park.

Benefits Of Cadmium Plating

Cadmium plating extends the life of your metal components, ensuring expected performance by offering a sacrificial coating that protects the substrate metal from corrosion.  The additional treatment of the cadmium plated component with chromate conversion coatings offers enhanced corrosion protection. The most common chromate conversion coating color is yellow/gold di-chromate.

Common Cadmium Plated Substrates

Substrates are the base metals that are to be cadmium coated. Iron, steel, brass, and copper metal components are often the recipients of the cadmium electroplating metal finishing process.

Why Does Metal Rust?

Cadmium Plating Industrial Applications

Cadmium coating is utilized in the Aerospace Industry due to it galvanic compatibility with the aluminum and stainless steel components that make up air frames. Cadmium also retains its appearance for longer periods than zinc plating, making visual inspections more reliable and creates a surface that is well suited for the adhesives commonly used.  The bi-products of corrosion, in comparison to zinc, and Cadmium’s natural lubricity make it the plating application of choice where components are likely to be disassembled, serviced, and re-assembled; frequent occurrences in aircraft maintenance.

Cadmium electroplating is still the preferred metal finishing process for components that are expected to perform in salt water environments and in other hostile applications such as mining, military and specialized transportation.  Cadmium also provides low electrical resistance resulting in excellent electrical conductivity. Cadmium offers outstanding solderability and is resistant to bacteria and mold.

The Toxicity Of Cadmium

Cadmium is a heavy metal that is hazardous to our environment.  H&E Plating Ltd will always help our clients, on outdated plating specifications, to find a metal finishing solution that works for both their needs and our habitat.  However, sometimes engineering specifications and applications demand cadmium’s unmatched, robust, corrosion protection.  In these cases, it is important to process the plating order efficiently and properly the first time, every time, to keep the introduction of cadmium into our environment at a minimum.
